Every two years Australia’s National Library and Information Association (ALIA) presents the Bess Thomas award.
This year Parkes’ REaDtember festival beat contenders from school, public, and regional libraries from throughout Australia.
Parkes Branch Librarian Tracie Mauro was at ALIA Melbourne award ceremony in Melbourne last Thursday to accept the honour.
“It’s wonderful that Parkes’ work with children, youths, and families is nationally recognised,” Tracie said.
“REaDtember gives us the opportunity to try out new and exciting ideas.
“September, October and November are all about play, reading and writing in the Parkes Shire.
“Creating engaging activities for all is our passion and we always have a whole lot of fun with our community.”
Shellie Buckle (Manager Cultural Education and Library Services) said the library team had worked hard over the past years in developing services for young people.
“We know our community and families appreciate us; To receive this award from our peers is just wonderful,” Shellie said.
“This year’s REaDtember currently underway is featuring science, song, supervillains and the global Fun Palaces event.
“It’s taking us to new heights!”
The Central West Credit Union is Parkes Shire Library’s REaDtember partner and has sponsored the event in 2013 and this year.
“Their support has ensured the continued success of REaDtember,” Shellie said.
