Queensland National MP George Christensen told Fairfax Media that while he agreed with the points Senator Lambie had been attempting to make regarding Islamic law and the burqa, she had no idea how to argue the case and was doing the campaign to ban the burqa a disservice.

"She goes too far and quite frankly she doesn't know how to argue the key point, she's doing the argument actually no favours and she should shut up because she doesn't know what she's talking about," he said.

Mr Christensen said he wanted to see Australia adopt France's decision to ban the burqa being worn in public, despite the Prime Minister Tony Abbott urging people "not to fret" about people's religion or clothing in the wake of last week's terror raids.

But Mr Christensen said he had been inundated with emails from voters and said he and many other Australians feel the burqa "instils fear".

"Jacqui Lambie mangles the message which is a shame when it comes to the issue of the burqa because there are serious concerns about it which many people have; having your face completely covered just instils fear in people," he said.

"It's alarming," he continued, "it's not conducive to human connection and it also causes a security concern, you don't know who's under it."

Mr Christensen denied he was "whipping up" fears about Muslims and said the country needed to debate the issue of the burqa being worn in public.

Mr Christensen's Coalition colleague Liberal Senator Cory Bernardi was the first government representative to raise concerns about the burqa in the wake of the terror raids.

He was quickly followed by PUP senator Jacqui Lambie who said the burqa was a "security risk" and claimed sharia law "involves terrorism".

"Well I think, um, when it comes to, um, sharia law, um, you know to me it's um ... it obviously involves terrorism. It involves a power that is not a healthy power," she said on Sunday.

She has urged supporters of Islamic law to leave Australia if they do not renounce their beliefs in the religious code.

The issue has caused divisions within the PUP party.

Party leader Clive Palmer told Fairfax Media on Monday that Senator Lambie's views were not party policy and on Tuesday denied he had questioned Senator Lambie's intellect in a conversation with colleague Senator Zhenya "Dio" Wang.

The alleged conversation took place in the staff cafeteria, nicknamed 'The Trough', and was overheard by two sources.

In a bizarre move that only inflamed the story, Senator Lambie responded to Fairfax's inquiry about the comments by copying in the entire press gallery to the email.

"Clive couldn't have said that about me - because I was standing at the "trough" as well - and he said the same thing to me about Dio," her media adviser Rob Messenger's email said.

Senator Lambie was not seen at the staff cafe on Tuesday morning, according to the sources who claimed to have heard Mr Palmer's complaints.

In the email, Senator Lambie and Mr Messenger appeared to confuse the staff cafe with a toilet cubicle.

"PS Jacqui wants to know - were your sources also standing at the "trough" as well - or were they together in a cubical [sic]."

Mr Palmer on Tuesday told a female journalist asking for confirmation of the story that she [the journalist] wasn't very bright and stressed the importance of national unity when it came to a person's religious beliefs.
