Moomba is dubbed "a fundraising event like no other" as competitors launch off over the water with their home-made flying machines, ranging from the comedic to the near professional.
Students have received construction and flight tips from Keith Engelsman - test pilot and flight advisor with the Sport Aircraft Association of Australia.
Members of the Parkes Model Aircraft Association were also on hand with some sample materials for aircraft.
Competition at Moomba is split into two categories - the Hawks for the serious competitors and the Penguins for the not-so-serious.
Students will be out and about fundraising in coming months.
They have to raise $500 to compete, for every $100 above that one metre is added to their flight distance.
In 2015 charities to benefit include Red Cross, Oxfam and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
