It is important to include “family”, because cancer affects, not just the patient, but the entire household.
In fact, it would be true to say that the family, watching on, suffer more than the patient.
The patient just does what they are told and the husband or wife does all the caring and worrying.
The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia have published a number of booklets on Prostate Cancer: “What you need to know about Prostate Cancer”; “Support Groups for People affected by Prostate Cancer” and “Caring for someone with Prostate Cancer”.
These should be available through any Health Centre.
The need for these booklets demonstrates the important role played by those caring for men with this cancer.
It is because of this important role, the role of the entire family, that both women and men are invited to our special “Parkes Prostate Cancer Awareness and Support Group” meeting next Tuesday evening, September 23.
It is at the Parkes Bowling and Sports Club, commencing at 7pm. Finger food will be supplied and it is free!
There will be three expert speakers on the night, Dr Manuel Yuhico, Urologist from Orange, Dr David Harwood, the local boy, and Dr John Troller, who has experience in setting up support groups.
So men front up, be a man and support your wife who supports you.
Your head has been in the sand long enough.
