The 3rd of September marks the occasion in 1901 when the Australian National Flag was first flown over the dome of the exhibition building in Melbourne.
At this time, Australia’s first Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Sir Edmund Barton, announced the winner of a competition to design a national flag for Australia.
The flag was originally known as the Commonwealth blue ensign.
“The Australian National Flag is our paramount national symbol which has served Australia for over 100 years,” he said.
“It is an emblem of our nation and identifies us to the world as being ‘Aussie’.
“I encourage individuals, community organisations, local authorities, businesses and schools within Calare to fly their flags proudly, especially on September 3 as we mark 113 years since the flag was first flown.”
Australian National Flag day was proclaimed on 28 August, 1996 by the then Governor-General.
