The bank building is a building from the Commercial Art Deco period before the Second World War.
Buildings from this period are noted for their outstanding brick work and their very solid construction.
The bricks were imported and the imposing style was also repeated in banks in Corowa (NSW) and Albury.
Both these buildings have been retained after considerable protest.
The Millers building has no particular heritage meaning but can still house an important local business.
We ask council to consider what the disappearance of these buildings will do to the street scape at the entrance to our CBD.
There are large car parks at both ends of the shopping centre which are mostly empty.
In the past, Parkes has lost several character buildings:
Federation House, Brown Street; also Orange Hall - for Big W.
CWA Rooms - car park for Big W.
Houses opposite Centrelink - car park.
Library building - car park.
Old Nursing Home, Church Street - car park.
Masonic Hall - proposed car park.
Federation House, Welcome Street - car park.
Miller and Cheney building - Coles, Target stores.
We suggest an alternative use could be found for the State Bank.
A new home for the Craft group and perhaps for the Art group?
It is time that the cultural aspect of the town is considered.
The council should not do what councils in our past have done and destroy interest in our town.
