Her thesis was based on “A search for a new identity: examining the journey of former refugee youths living in Australia.”
Jonnell is the eldest daughter of Helen and John Uptin of Parkes, and now lives in Kiama.
She lectures at Wollongong University.
Jonnell attended Middleton and Parkes High School before going to Bathurst Teachers College.
She taught in primary schools around the state before heading to Singapore for two years, where she taught English as a second language.
After a short stint in Sydney, Jonnell then went to Thailand for eight years, teaching English and music.
She won a scholarship to Wollongong University for her Masters degree.
Coincidentally, Jonnell met up with Jenny Milligan, who was a teacher when she was a student at Parkes High School and she is a major supporter.
