GRENFELL: This year there appears to be an upbeat expectation of a good result for almost all of our folk on the land. And why not. Already, in July alone we have had over 25 mls of rainfall in the shire. According to James Ingrey, Branch Manager and Senior Farm Consultant at the Grenfell branch of Lachlan Fertilizers, the present rainfall timing and the amount is probably the best start to a season in a long time.

ORANGE: The NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) is investigating the transportation and disposal of asbestos from a Summer Street building site following reports contractors may not have followed protocol when dealing with the hazardous material.

ORANGE: Orange District Cricket Association president Mark Frecklington says a new white picket fence at Wade Park is another step towards ensuring the ground plays host to top-flight cricket for years to come. A staple of any suburban or bush cricket ground in the country, a picket fence was budgeted for in the original upgrade of Wade Park in 2011.

COWRA: She found her feet at Cowra Ballet School and her wings in Glasgow at the recent Commonwealth Youth Dance Festival. Michaela Jeffries has just returned home from performing with the Wagana Aboriginal Dancers, an experience she said was unforgettable.

ORANGE: Growth in education and health could re-establish Orange’s status as the biggest regional centre in the central west. In the latest population projections from NSW Planning and Environment, based on historical data, Orange is set to fall behind the population growth of Bathurst and Dubbo. Bathurst will swell to a population of 51,550 by 2031, Dubbo will grow to a city of 46,500 people and Orange will lag third with 46,250 people.

CANOWINDRA: Working dogs from all over the state are set to contend at the first cattle dog trial in the region coming up next month. Canowindra's inaugural cattle dog trials are set to be held on Saturday, August 2.

ORANGE: The paleo, five and two, no-sugar and Atkins diets should be thrown out the window if you want  to live a healthy lifestyle, according to Medicare Local dietitians. “Fad diets can be harmful in the growth and development of children and need to be considered carefully when applied to the whole family,” said dietician Jessica Melmoth.

COWRA: A pair of sugar gliders rescued back in January 2014 as tiny babies have been successfully raised and released thanks to the dedication and care of a WIRES Central West Carer and an observant member of the public who called WIRES when he noticed their mother dead at the base of a tree.

ORANGE: Tattoos aren’t just body art for Cas Hallinan, they tell the story of her life. This week Miss Hallinan’s story will be told to a large audience of tattoo lovers when she competes in the Miss Ink Australia pageant at The Vanguard in Sydney on Friday.

BLAYNEY: Blayney resident Kathlyn Schmarr has recently returned from nine days at Singleton Army Base as the Course Cadet Commander for the Australian Army Cadet Promotion Courses. Held in January and July each year, more than 180 cadets from throughout NSW attended the recent camp.

ORANGE: It is fast, furious and loads of fun and now is the ideal time to get involved with the Orange Roller Derby League. The league is on the lookout for new players, but also people to assist as referees, officials and volunteers.

COWRA: Remote locations in Cowra Shire with poor mobile phone and broadband reception are being encouraged to contact Cowra Council to apply for Federal Government funding to fix the problem, Cowra Mayor, Councillor Bill West said.

NARROMINE: A colourful, eye-catching tractor made its way down Dandaloo Street this week as Ken Tuckey and his wife Joyce drove into town. The colourful tractor is the latest charity venture as the couple aims to raise $50,000 for CareFlight, Westpac Life Saving Helicopter and Kids Cancer Research Trust.

LITHGOW: Panthers go pink to raise funds for Lithgow Cancer Support Group

LITHGOW: The Lithgow Highland Pipe Band has taken out ‘best overall display band’ and received a trophy at the Aberdeen Highland Gathering earlier this month.

MUDGEE: For 30  years, Neill Duncan made a living playing saxophone, either solo or in bands,  but his music career almost came to an end when a rare form of cancer caused doctors in Sydney to amputate his left arm. He now plays a one-handed saxophone.
