Despite some personnel changes in the squad, the core group of players that were successful last season return to offer a quiet confidence from supporters of the club.
Parkes captain-coach Pat Rosser is pleased with how his squad has performed in the lead-up matches and expects them to only get stronger.
“We have great structures and an excellent culture in place at the club which everyone has bought into,” Rosser said.
“New players Alex Prout and Cameron Standen, along with the returning Evi Nioko, have fit in really well so far.
“They are still adjusting as are all the team.
“We will take some time gelling and our pre-season footy has shown that.
“Our quality of football hasn’t been great but we will get better and better,” he said.
In a huge boost for Parkes, Dennis Moran returns to the side after sitting out the trials with a back injury.
Moran’s inclusion is timely for the Spacemen who were lacking a bit of experience with the retirement of Jamie Szczerbanik, Joe Spicer out with a knee injury, and Rosser still at least six weeks away from a return after undergoing extensive groin surgery in the off-season.
Moran’s guidance, leadership and decision making will be invaluable if Parkes are to make a a strong start to their title defence.
“Getting off to a good start is crucial for us,” Rosser said.
“No teams can afford to drop games early in the season.
“Last season showed that getting off to a good start can set your season up just as a poor start can cost a top three or top five position,” he said.
Last year’s premiers head to Wellington knowing full well that they will face a determined home team who will prove stern opposition on Sunday.
The Cowboys finished in the top five last season and put in a strong performance in their semifinal despite not progressing further.
They pushed the then defending premier Dubbo Macquarie team all the way, just going down 32-34.
When the Spacemen faced the Cowboys in Wellington last season, they scored a convincing 44-28 victory which they matched with another big win at home later in the season.
“The Cowboys are an unpredictable team,” Rosser said.
“They have plenty of energy and enthusiasm while playing a very ad lib style of footy.
“They can score points quickly and pounce on any half-chance.
“We will need to limit their opportunies by doing the basics right.
“Putting a high value on possession, getting to our kicks and winning the contest at the play-the-ball will go a long to bringing home the points.
“Winning is a habit - one that we will hope to start again against the Cowboys on Sunday,” he said.
