The support group appreciates the many hours over several years that Parkes M&D has clocked up presenting the yearly concert which raises these funds.
The support group is the nominated charity for Parkes M&D who give so much enjoyment to the public while raising money to benefit Parkinson’s sufferers.
A cheque for $250 was also received after the March meeting from Trundle Bush Tucker Day which was accepted with thanks.
Numbers were somewhat reduced at the March meeting due to family commitments and medical appointments, but it was very pleasing to welcome a new member, Kath Pollock.
There are now more than 150 sufferers in the Parkes Shire and a lot of help is available.
A Parkinson’s nurse is now stationed at Orange.
Her name is Wendy Smith and she can be contacted on 0498 391 338 Monday and Friday from 9.00am to 3.00pm.
She addressed a Parkes meeting last year and members found her most helpful.
An individual exercise program known as PD Warrior has begun in Sydney and one local member has found this very helpful with movement.
Enquiries can be made on 1300 698 291 or 0299 067 777 or at www.pdwarrior.com.
Local physiotherapists have been contacted and it is hoped that they can be of assistance.
A medicine list for people with Parkinson’s and a check list for managing Parkinson’s symptoms has been compiled and can be obtained from members of the support group.
Our Growing Challenge….
Parkinson’s is a chronic, complex, disabling neurological condition which currently has no known cure.
The four key symptoms are tremors, rigidity, slow or impaired muscle movement and postural instability with literally dozens of complex secondary symptoms.
More than 80,000 Australians have a diagnosis of Parkinson’s.
Typically the disease manifests in patients aged around 60 years.
However, 10% of those diagnosed will be under the age of 40.
Parkinson’s is more prevalent than prostrate, ovarian and cervical cancer or leukaemia.
One in five people with Parkinson’s is of working age (15-64).
Of particular concern to policy makers is the sobering fact that Parkinson’ prevalence is increasing at around 2-3% per year.
Despite its increasing prevalence and high cost to the community, Parkinson’s’ is still not recognised as a priority under Australia’s chronic disease strategy.
BIG BIKE RIDE FOR PARKINSON’S
Riders arrived in Parkes from Sydney on Saturday, March 29, on the big ride.
An official photo was taken at The Dish and evening entertainment was held at Parkes Showground.
It featured local band “Millthumpers” with special guest Angry Anderson.
New members are very welcome and they will find helpful information over a cup of tea.
Meetings are held at the Neighbourhood Centre in Currajong Street on the second Tuesday of the month at 10.30am.
Guest speakers are planned throughout the year.
