Later this year you could have this opportunity while also helping to build a girl’s dormitory in the village of Salleri of the Solukhumbu area of eastern Nepal.
The dorms will be made from earthbags, cloth bags filled with dirt.
This will save money, time, and the backs of local porters.
Traditionally, porters have carried heavy loads of bricks to constructions sites but by using the earthbag method, the bags are filled on-site with no portage required.
Between 10 and 15 adventurous volunteers (male or female over 18) are needed for the construction project.
No previous building experience is necessary.
Volunteers will work with local tradesman.
The construction of the dorm is being organized by ‘Edge of Seven’ based out of Denver, Colorado.
Edge of Seven is a nonprofit organization that promotes education for Nepali girls living in remote villages.
Local teacher from Eugowra, Jeanine Gibby, learned of the program while volunteering with the Australian Himalayan Foundation’s Teacher Training Program in 2011.
Having travelled to the Solukhumbu on numerous occasions to work with schools, Mrs. Gibby sees the need for girls to have their own boarding house.
Girls (and boys alike) who live in remote villages often walk hours to attend school and having their own dorms will give girls a safe place to stay overnight during the school week.
The dates of the trip are set for November 30 to December 16, 2014.
The cost of the program is $2600 Australian and includes room, board, fees into historical sites, and airfare to Salleri.
The cost doesn’t include airfare from Sydney to Kathmandu, travel insurance, entry visa, and recommended vaccinations.
Deadline to sign up for this incredible opportunity is May 1.
Sturdy individuals who enjoy immersion in a different culture, enjoy mountain trekking, and enjoy promoting girl’s education should call or email Jeanine Gibby.
