“I spoke about the fact that Calare voted for a Government that believed in jobs, infrastructure, a dam policy and one that puts people before political correctness,” Mr Cobb said.
“I also spoke about my concerns that we have had a dam phobia in this country for too long.
“I reiterated my firm belief that a new dam in Calare would create hope, optimism and lift the morale, but would also support the new industry that we so desperately need and the existing industries already in our region and give them the confidence to plan ahead.
“The Needles Dam proposal is a natural regional short, medium and long-term solution to a current regional issue.
“The rationale is there and the Parliament has now heard it – all that is required now is $3 million to kick start the process with a feasibility study.”
Mr Cobb said in his speech that he has always believed that to create jobs, you first must create opportunity.
“We all know that throwing money at something doesn’t magically keep or create jobs – just look at what the taxpayer funds did for Mitsubishi, Holden, Ford and Toyota and they’re all going or gone,” he said.
“Rather you have to create the right environment to create jobs and that involves encouraging new industries to the region and helping those already there to expand and take on new workers.
“Of course a new dam will also create some immediate jobs, but the long-term goal is to support other jobs that would be created through new or expanded industries.
“I am determined to create an environment in Calare where opportunities are created, jobs are created and morale is boosted.
“I intend to ensure that the Nationals and the Coalition make good for Calare, and show the leadership necessary to make it happen.”
