At present, only Tullamore in the shire is seen as RV frendly.
Never was the need for Parkes to become an RV area greater than with the Elvis Festival, with a huge number of vehicles present.
Tourism Manager, Katrina Dwyer told the last meeting of council that the RV Taskforce had held several meetings to address what was needed to better service the RV market in the shire.
“It is evident from applications with the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia (CMCA) that Parkes Shire, with the exception of of Tullamore, is lacking low cost overnight parking options for self contained vehicles with five kilometres of the CBD,” she said.
“Applications for Parkes, Trundle and Peak Hill are still under review as overnight parking in these towns do not meet the affordability rate of between $10 and $12 per night for an unpowered site.”
Katrina said talks had been held with the Showground trusts in the three centres with a view to offering reduced rates for CMCA vehicles.
“This has not been a preferred option by the Showground Trusts,” she said. “They acknowledge the benefits of becoming RV friendly, but cannot commit to reducing rates at this time.”
In light of this, the RV Taskforce is investigating alternative options for low cost parking to enable the entire shire to be recognised as RV friendly.
Katrina said locations being investigated include PAC Park in Parkes; Peak Hill Open Cut Experience carpark; and Trundle Racecourse.
Further details will be reported when developments occur.
