The Newtown Jets scored a popular and deserved NSW Cup win over Windsor Wolves at Pioneer Oval in Parkes yesterday, in another highly successful promotion.
Beaten 34-20 by the Wolves in the corresponding game in Parkes last season, the Jets delighted their expanding fan base with a tradesmanlike effort before an appreciative audience.
While the lead changed hands five times and each side scored five tries, few would deny the Newtown triumph.
At times, the second placed Wolves, enjoying a plethora of NRL experience, appeared likely winners but invariably the Jets were able to respond with their trademark conviction, flair and finesse.
It was try for try in the opening half on a manicured surface, the Wolves scoring on the half time siren to lead 12-10.
In a tense and highly entertaining second session, the Jets led 16-12, then Windsor 18-16, before the Jets crossed twice within five minutes to lead 26-18.
Windsor scored on full time to reduce the final margin to two points as both clubs reflected on a pulsating promotion of the code.
Three try star George Jennings was a stand out for Windsor while boom prop, Kane Evans won the individual accolade for the winners.
Parkes league supremo Graham Cole said it was hoped the teams would return and the match would continue for years to come as an integral feature of the June long weekend in Parkes.
Pioneer Oval and the town in general received widespread praise for its capacity to stage another representative fixture.
Newtown 26 (H. Wells 2, A. Henry, J. Aloomai, L. Tasi tries; P. Rokalati 3 goals) defeated Windsor 22 (G. Jennings 3, G. Daniela, V. Kalifi tries; M. Moylan goal).
