NSW Health Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said approximately one in four people over the age of 65 will suffer a fall this year and the April Falls Day campaign provides a timely reminder that falls are a leading cause of injury for older people.
“Research shows that falls are a major cause of injury-related hospitalisations,” Dr Chant said.
“Falls result in approximately 27,000 hospital admissions each year and cause at least 300 deaths in NSW.
“A fall can trigger the beginning of a downward spiral in an older person’s health, but they can be prevented.
“Older people experiencing falls should talk to a health professional who can assess what factors are causing them to fall and provide advice on the actions they can take to reduce their risk of falling and maintain their health.”
NSW Health is leading a number of initiatives to reduce fall-related injuries in the community.
One of the most effective ways for older people to reduce their risk of falls is regular balance and strength exercises.
Staying physically active is the single most important thing we can do to remain fit and independent, Dr Chant stressed.
As people grow older they lose muscle strength and their sense of balance.
This can lead to a fall.
To reduce the risk of injury from a fall, it is important to include activities that improve your balance and increase your strength.
The following types of exercises improve strength and balance:
Tai Chi, home exercises, group exercises, dancing, gymsessions, pilates and yoga.
