From The Umpires Chair

The last round of the Tuesday night comps produced some exciting results as they head into their semi-finals and play-offs tomorrow night, while the Monday night A grade comp play Round 8 tonight and their last round will be next week in their first past the post comp.

MONDAY NIGHT A GRADE

Some fantastic tennis was played last week with some close sets played.

Alex and Luke Evans were on fire last week scoring a 3 set win and 19 points after defeating Michelle Hawke and sub Ian Morrissey 6/4, Brad Wilson and John Bruton 7/5 and Paul Jewell and Michael Herft 6/0.

Michelle and Ian came away with 17 points with their best set being a 7/6 hard-fought victory over Brad and John. Brad and John also came away with 17 points, while Paul and Michael found the going tough and managed 5.

TUESDAY NIGHT FEDERERS

Some close matches last week left organisers doing the sums to find out the final positions for the semi’s tomorrow night.

The super Power Rangers team of Mackenzie Campbell, Douglas Keith and Brent Tucker came away with the coveted first place on 53 points after they defeated second-placed NBS Squad.

Jade Newham, Kaine Byrnes and Steve Skinner went so close to upsetting the favourites after sets and games were equal going into their last singles and doubles contest. But Brent held on to take a 6/5 win over Steve, and Sub Max Keith partnered his brother Douglas to defeat Jade and Kaine 6/2 to take the match by 4 sets to 2.

Hot Shots left their best form to last when they upset the Triple J’s team by 5 sets to 1.

Despite the scoreline it was a close match that could have easily ended in a draw. Brendan Brewer steadied his team to the win after he defeated Nick Joyce 6/5, and then partnered his son Jack to defeat Nick and Jason Wythes 6/5.

The match of the night had to go to the Mis-Hits and Team UTH clash. Adam Jones, Darren James and Angie Peisley had a great battle with Bradley Parker, Myles Smith and Blake Smith. It all came down to the last set, and Bradley and Myles hung onto a 6/5 win over Adam and Darren to even up the match with 3 sets apiece.

After a games countback it was revealed that they each scored 26 games, so the spoils had to be split, with 5 points each going onto scoreboard.

The battle between the “cellar-dwellers” saw Smashers (sub Taylor Dolbel, Erin Cheney and Blake Byrnes) defeat the Just In Case lineup (sub David Quinn, sub Emily Swindle and Rachel Job) by 5 sets to 1.

The final pointscore saw Power Rangers in first place on 53, from NBS Squad on 41.

The Hot Shots win last week left them in third place on the ladder on 39 points after lagging in sixth position. Hot Shots were equal with Mis-Hits on 39 points, and after a check on their Round 3 clash when they played each other, Hot Shots were the victors, relegating Mis-Hits to fourth position.

Team UTH and Triple J’s ended up equal on 36 points, so fifth place went to Team UTH after they won their head-to-head Round 4 clash by 29 games to 25 after sets were tied 3-all.

Smashers came in seventh on 22 points, while Just In Case were eighth on 14 points.

All teams will participate in the play-offs and tomorrow night the semi’s will see some sensational matches with Power Rangers to verse Mis-Hits and NBS Squad versing Hot Shots.

The winners will face off next week in the finals. Other play-offs for minor placings will see Team UTH coming up against Just In Case and Triple J’s will verse Smashers.

NADALS DIVISIONS

Last week the 3 Wise Men??? team of Lachlan Thompson, Josh Boardman and Chloe Potts kept their undefeated record intact when they scored a close 27 games to 23 win over the White’s Electrical lineup.

White’s Electrical got off to a good start, winning the first three sets, but the 3 Wise Men??? got their act together to even up the match and forcing a games countback.

Outback Thunder (Cameron Van Der Merwe, Jonty Ralph and Matthew Allen) scored a great 5 set to 1 victory over the X-Tra Specials team of Harley Wall, Steve

Prescott and sub Jacko Littlewood. Despite the easy scoreline, there were some hotly contested sets that went down to the wire.

NewsPower were on fire again last week and Luke Nash, Rob Macdonald and Greg Nash had a great match with the SCT Girls despite the 6-love scoreline. Coralie Hall saved the day for the girls when she put 2 games on the board to prevent a total whitewash.

The much anticipated match-up between the SCT Guys and the SCT Blokes was a ripper with sets 2-all going into the last change over. With sets going one apiece it was all even with the final result going to a games countback. The SCT Guys (Shane Avram, Paul Thompson and Victor Avram) were lucky enough to grab the win over Jimmy Knights, Mark Doherty and Geoff Smith by just one game.

The final pointscore saw the 3 Wise Men??? in first position on 52 points. Outback Thunder were next on 47, then NewsPower close behind on 46. White’s Electrical slipped into fourth position on 43, then X-Tra Specials fifth on 31, SCT Guys sixth on 29, SCT Blokes seventh on 20 and the SCT Girls eighth on 12.

With all teams participating in the play-offs, the top four will only be contesting for the finals. The semi’s will see first placed 3 Wise men??? coming up against fourth placed White’s Electrical, and second placed Outback Thunder will verse third placed NewsPower. The winners of these matches will play in the finals next week. Other play-offs for the minor placings see X-Tra Specials playing SCT Girls, and in a repeat of last week, the SCT Guys will verse the SCT Blokes again. The SCT Guys and Blokes will start their match at 6pm.
