SQUASH ROUND-UP

07 Dec, 2009 09:22 AM
Would players with outstanding fees please finalise their amounts this week.

Round 14 in both A & B grades tonight and tomorrow night, followed by a combined grand final on Wednesday night.

In both grades the grand finals will be contested between teams finishing first and second in the front draw, and teams fifth and sixth will play in the back draw.

A grade – round 13

Trotmans 30 def Parkers 20; McClearys 34 def Coles 16; Poons 25 – Rogans 25; Kross 34 def Swindles 16.

With one round to play the point score reads: Poons 374, McClearys 350, Kross 348, Trotmans 328, Parkers 319, Rogans 314, Swindles 287, Coles 279.

No doubt all interest in tomorrow night’s matches will focus on the results of the McClearys and Kross teams.

Both in contention for second place and the right to play Poons in the grand final.

Just two points separate them.

Ironically McCleary’s and Kross both earned 34 points each last week, hence McCleary’s maintaining their two point advantage.

Kross’ play Trotmans and McClearys’ play Parkers.

Comparisons from when they last played in round seven won’t give a true indication as there were a couple of subs, plus a couple of reverse results will make a difference!

Parkers and Rogans look set to contest the back draw.

Graham Hitchick claims his win against Neil Macaulay was a rare result, Neil has usually had the upper hand.

A good result for Graham, he lost the first game 10/15 but then won the next three 15/13, 15/11, 15/9.

Neill can expect another tough match this week when he plays Scott Cusack.

Scott won 3/0 over Andrew Taggart last week, and seems set to take out the line three grading.

He’s only lost one match all comp, and that was to Neil in round seven, so he’ll be out to reverse that result.

When they last played, Lee Baker had a quick 3/0 result over David Nightingale but it was much closer last week, Lee did jump out to an early lead with a 17/15, 15/12 in the opening games, then David won the next two 15/10, 17/15.

Lee had a touch more left in the tanks, taking out the decider 15/9.

B grade

Popes 20 – Hannellys 20; Jones 22 def Iveys 18; Labuschagnes 19 def Owens 21; Tolhursts 20 - Burkes 20.

Hannellys are currently holding onto the number one spot, but even with just one week left, are no certainty of a grand final berth.

They sit on 292, Jones 2 on 287.

Labuschagne’s just two points behind them on 285.

All these teams are in contention for the grand final.

Owen’s sit on 274 and may possibly make a back draw final.

Ivey’s are fifth on 257.

One point behind them are Pope’s 256.

Tolhurst’s and Burkes sit seventh and eighth on 215 and 214 respectively and to put it tactfully have no chance at all of making the finals.

Jamie Pope’s been undefeated since joining the comp in round eight and Laura Miller’s had a couple of close calls lately but has so far done well to still hold onto her unbeaten status.

Ryan Carnie succumbed to the pressure, relinquishing his unbeaten status last week in a tough five setter to Alison Quin.

Ryan was up 2-1, 15-12, 8-15, 15-9 but Alison been playing well came home strong, taking the next two games 15-8, 15-7.

Ben Coultas and Nathan Prince also had a tough five setter.

Ben went to a quick 2-0 lead, 15-8 in both.

Nathan fought back to take the next two games, 15-13, 15-6.

This set up a nail-biting finale, eventually going Ben’s way in a short game 15-14.

Stacey Nash also did well to take a game off the inform Laura Miller 6-15, 9-15, 15-11, 6-15.
