Parkes man Scott Johnstone loves his fishing and has been known to tell a story or two about his exploits.
But now he has proof of an amazing catch from the south coast.
No one would believe him until he produced the photo.
“We (my lovely wife Liz and my son Jamie and daughter Tenaya) go to Sussex Inlet on the south coast to have a break on the occasions I get to have a holiday around Christmas .
“This year was the same as usual, getting sunburnt, catching plenty of smaller fish and basically enjoying the company of my wife and kids.
“That was until I was out in St Georges Basin just relaxing and enjoying the quiet peace of sitting in my boat with an old kid’s rod I bought some time ago for my son - but which I now claim as mine!”
Scott said he baited the line up with a very well presented prawn on a kamukatsu No.2 hook with 12 pound line.
“My fishing rod suddenly bent over and I struck hard and set the hook in what i thought was an OK fish.
“It took me around 15 minutes to reel the fish in.
“When I looked down and saw a just-legal size Whiting coming up, I thought there was no way this fish could be that hard or heavy to reel in.
“That was when i saw this monster Flathead coming behind it with my hook and line attached to it.
“It was then I realised the Flathead and the Whiting were both on the same line - the Flathead must have been after the Whiting that just took my bait and actually got itself hooked.
“So I caught two fish at the same time on the same hook and line.
“I know it sounds like a very tall tale but it is true.
“This is the biggest fish I have ever landed(11 pound 11 ounces - 90 cms) and I did have both fish on my line at the same time.”
Scott said he had been going to Sussex Inlet for some years now.
“We always have a great time fishing there, the people are nice and it has a real friendly atmosphere.
“This just helps to make it extra special!”
