Crunch time for Tuesday night netball

Crunch time for Tuesday night netball

22 Jun, 2009 10:29 AM
We have missed a few weeks of netball due to the much needed rain so we were holding our breath to see what Tuesday would give us.

It has been a very successful season of netball with 15 teams competing for the grand final honours.

A grade - Semi 1. CWA v Cambridge.

This should have been the clash of the round with both these teams playing fast accurate netball.

Unfortunately, CWA was unable to field a full team with two of its key players unavailable for the round. An easy trip to the grand final for Cambridge.

Thank you to the players from Cambridge who “changed colours” for this match so a game could be played and to Maria George and Sarah ten Cate who controlled the game from the side line.

Players who impacted most on this game where Gabe Rosser of Cambridge and Lisa Elliot for CWA.

A grade - Semi 2. Coachman 34 def La Bella 14.

The Coachman team started with only six players until the second quarter when Kate Hazelton arrived much to her teams’ relief.

Even without Kate the score at quarter time was 9-4 to Coachman, by half time the older girls had pushed on to a 10 point lead at 17-7.

Coach of the La Bella 15 year rep team had a few words of encouragement and instruction at half time and the team lifted.

That also had an affect on the Coachman team who responded by lifting to the challenge and moving into “State League” mode.

At the third bell the score was 25-10 to Coachman. Credit to the La Bella team they fought strongly and didn’t allow Coachman any easy points.

At final whistle the score read Coachman 34 def La Bella 14.

Players who worked hard during the match included Kayla Thornhill and Emma Gosper for La Bella and Shayna Male and Cathy Adams for Coachman.

Kerry Dwyer and Cathy Ryan controlled the game from the side line – thank you ladies.

B grade - Semi 1. Dwyers Fresh MCA 41 def Mid West Home Loans 26.

The young 13 year rep team knew they had their hands full against the more experienced team as they took the court for the 6.30pm game.

Dwyers Fresh MCA opened the scoring with a quick three goals before the young rep players started to fight back scoring goal for goal for the rest of the quarter.

At the first whistle Dwyers Fresh MCA lead 8-5.

Bec Pascoe and Amanda Draper combined under goals using skills and height advantage to keep the younger team working hard.

Hayley Chester took a couple of tumbles during the game but in her usual manner bounced up assuring all she was fine.

Thank you to Kerry Dwyer and Kathy ten Cate for umpiring this game.

B grade - Semi 2. Lotus Imports 21 def Halls Jewellers 16.

The Lotus imports team were the favourites for this match and led all the way to the final whistle.

Strong games to Natasha Butt and Nicola Searle for Lotus Imports and Amanda Job and Teagan Cox for Halls Jewellers.

Umpires Julie Gosper and Kathy ten Cate did a great job.

C grade - Semi 1. Choc Attack 35 def PCYC 15.

Choc Attack has been the great success story of the season this year. When they first entered the competition last year this team had a lot of experience but a very long time between games (about 20 years?)

Having a couple of very recently experienced players in Monica Murray and Tara Brady has made a huge difference to the style and confidence of this team.

The young PCYC team only entered the competition at the mid way point and under the watchful eye of new coach Jane Hope-Hodgetts they are developing well.

Young umpires Rai Warren and Kayla Thornhill did a great job controlling the game from the sideline. Well done girls.

C grade - Semi 2. Glow Electric 32 def Railway Bowling Club 21.

This game could have gone either way with both these teams fairly even throughout the season.

At the first whistle the score was 6-3 to Glow so it was still wide open.

Kim Robinson and Rachel Ross pushed themselves hard to lift their team and claw back some of the goals but Glow Electric had too great a lead at the third whistle up by 13 goals.

Despite this the Railway Bowling team won the last quarter shooting eight goals to six but it was not enough to take victory.

Carla Hando and Lisa Boney had very strong games for Glow Electric. Calli Miller and Kim Orr controlled the game from the sideline.
