Netballers preparing for State Age

24 Jun, 2009 10:00 AM
Parkes junior representative netball teams have been busily preparing for the State Age championships next month by competiing in regional carnivals.

As well as the Parkes carnival held a couple of weeks ago, the under 12s and 14s representative teams travelled to Cowra for the annual carnival last month, while the under 15s headed to Wagga.

The girls should be justifiably proud of their results. Their fitness has improved greatly thanks to their trainer Greg Jones, and their skill levels are improving each time they step on the court.

The Cowra carnival was a tough day for the under 12s as the girls played eight games.

They started with a winning streak in their first two games before losing the rest.

The girls went down to Dubbo 11-4, Canberra 13-1 and Bathurst 11-1.

Hopefully the girls are learning new things each time they attend a carnival and are determined to train harder before the State Age championships.

Thank you to Tanya Wright, Leanne Wright and Pam Tomlinson for supporting the girls on the day.

The under 14s had a full strength team and entered the fray yet again to test their skills and composure against the eight other sides that ventured to Cowra.

They started strongly, winning three of their first four games with a minor hiccup against Canberra.

After lunch, the girls dropped off despite having strong showings in the first half of all four games.

The girls did fight it out and were lucky enough to come away with a draw in the last game.

The under 15s headed to Wagga and coach Sandra Canellis was pleased with the team’s results.

She is hoping for more improvement before they leave for the State Age championships in July.

The Parkes shooters Stacey Jones and Elise Kiley played extremely good netball all day shooting above 60 per cent for the entire day.

The midcourt of Sarah Job, Ashley Rosser, Emma Gosper, Madeleine Leeming and Brigette Johnston had a tough day, however they had an impressive win in the last game of the day.

Emma Gosper had a huge day playing all seven games and played her best game of the year.

Ashley Rosser at WD had a fantastic day, improving with every game.

Once again the defenders shone as Grace Murray and a very sick Kayla Thornhill thwarted many attacking raids.

Many thanks to umpire Nikki Thornhill, who umpired and helped with warm-up drills before each game.

Thanks to Kim Orr for her tireless work with the shooters the Monday before at training.

Thanks also to our manager Liz Thornhill who did all the organisation for the carnival from booking the accommodation, organising dinner, buying food, filling waterbottles and scoring all day.

She was very prepared and was always on hand with food or drink for both players and coach.

Thanks must go to Greg Jones, Leanne Kiley, Monica Murray (and family) and Annette Parker (and family) for their support at Wagga carnival.

All players perform better when their parents take the time to attend carnivals and Tuesday night games.
