Young and old clean up

03 Nov, 2009 01:41 PM
Doubles by veteran Bill Warren in B grade and junior golfer Blake Parker in C grade along with a fine 2 over par round of 73 by reigning club champion Adam Ferguson were the highlights of Saturday’s golf.

The event was for the Halls Jewellers November Monthly Medal for trophies kindly donated by Parkes Heavy Mechanical Repairs in the handicap division.

Warren capped a brilliant day by also winning the Westcott’s Retravision Medal of Medals title.

He congratulated both Parkes Heavy Mechanical Repairs boss, Mick Carroll, for his support of the club as well as Ian Westcott of Westcott’s Retravision at the presentation of trophies after Warren fired a superb 84 off the stick for a nett 69.

Meanwhile, junior golfer Blake Parker who has only just joined the club, will find that his 25 handicap will take a severe slashing after he recorded the day’s best nett score of 65.

This along with his scratch score captured the C grade double.

In A grade reigning club champion Adam Ferguson fired a solid 73 off the stick to take the Halls Jewellers scratch award while Laurie Wakefield shaved a reversal of form in taking the Parkes Heavy Mechanical Repairs sponsored handicap award with 68 nett.

Former club champion John Green showed his liking to the greens when he captured both the Putter of Putter championship and the Monthly Putting competition with just 26 putts from sponsors Griffins Leading Edge.

Other major award winners from the Halls Jewellers monthly medal saw Warren Blatch, 70 nett, take home the veterans mug while the BAKM Bradmans award was won convincingly by Geoff Leonard who has vowed to come back bigger and better.

Saturday’s Nearest the Pin award winners were Phil Barnard at 354 cms on the Miskells Tyrepower, 1st hole, Roger Larsen at a close 139cms on the Griffins Leading Edge 4th hole.

The Dirt Doctor Landscaping 6th hole was won by Michael Dumesny at 491cms while Laurie Wakefield proved too good on the Harvey Norman 4th hole and on the final par 3, the tough Westlime sponsored 15th hole saw Mark Kelly claim the two golf balls at 422cms.

The day’s final two awards the Parkes Ready Mixed Concrete 9th hole in two shots saw John Eales victorious at 157cms and on the Parkes Heavy Mechanical Repairs 18th hole in two shots went to Justin Sutton at 282cms.

Ball winners from Saturday’s round went to Justin Sutton, Adam Ferguson, Mark Kelly, Mel Jones, Phil Barnard, Peter Dixon, Warren Blatch, Wayne Powter, Joe Crowley and Michael Dumesny.

Last Saturday, prior to the presentation of the daily competition club president Paul Thomas presented junior Justin Sutton with his Lachlan Valley District Golf Associations representative shirts for this weekend’s NSW Country Championships (see picture).

Sutton is the club’s only representative and has been selected in the LVDGA junior team which will represent the district.

The junior side comprises Sutton as well as Forbes players James Grierson and Bill Nixon and will be managed by Andrew Grierson the LVDGA Junior Promotions Officer.

Parkes did not gain a representative in the strong senior side which comprises Forbes golfers John and Steven Betland and Luke Hurford. They will be joined by the Condobolin pairing of Zac Mitchell and Brad Hurley, with Parkes president Paul Thomas the manager.

The championships will be played at the Murrumbidgee Country Club in Canberra this weekend.

Last Saturday the September/October National Australia Bank Financial Planning B1 Monthly Consistency award was awarded to club captain Phil Barnard who recorded a narrow one point margin over up and coming junior Thomas Ward.

NAB’s local representative Wayne Powter congratulated Barnard and the club for the way the club promotes its sponsors whilst Barnard was full of praise to the sponsors.

In Veterans news, a great field of 47 players contested last Thursday’s 12 hole stableford competition at Parkes.

Numbers were fairly even with locals Parkes having 24 players and Forbes 23.

Parkes players dominated the weekly awards with Mick Miller ensuring Parkes took home the Mick Miller Shield when he recorded the day’s best handicap score of 28 points, two shots clear of Joe Goodie who survived the dreaded countback after recording 26 points from four players including Victor Gaidzionis, Graeme Cooke, Ron Klein and Forbes player David Williams.

The Mick Miller Shield which is played in conjunction saw Parkes record a comfortable 10 point victory 132 to 122.

This Thursday play will be at Forbes for the programmed 1pm hit-off and it is hoped as many as possible Parkes players make the trip.

Members are reminded that the club will host a 4BBB stableford handicap shootout on Sunday, 6 December.

Nominations for what should be a popular competition will open on Saturday, 21 November, at 6pm and only the first 19 pairings who nominate and pay the entry fee of $40 will get to play.

Another of the conditions of entry is that members can only nominate one pairing and that there will be no substitutes.

A full list of the conditions of entry is on the members notice board.

The Friday night duty roster for this week sees the club secretary Colleen Flynn carry out the duties of duty counterperson.

On the golf course this weekend members will contest an 18 hole stableford for the Col Fletcher Ford and KIA trophy with the day being a medley competition while on Sunday it’s a nine hole medley stableford for a club trophy.
