Parkes Lady Golfer’s Notes

The weather is being highly variable, but the course is still in excellent condition, thanks to the staff and the watering system.

Magpies are still “doing their thing”, but the swoops should ease off soon.

Last Wednesday we played a stableford event for the Painted Daisies trophy, which was won by Lesley Fisher with 36 points.

Ball winners were Lynne Guise, 35 points, and Colleen Flynn, 34 points.

Margaret Hogan also had 34, but Colleen beat her on a countback.

Nearest the pins: Lynne Guise on the 1st and 15th and Colleen Flynn on the 4th, Lesley Fisher on the 6th and Dawn Crowe on the 11th.

Saturday’s 18 hole stroke event, sponsored by Judith Phillips was won by Lynne Guise with a 69 nett, (snip, snip says the handicapper).

She was followed by Margaret Hogan, 71 nett, then Kaye Jones, 72 nett, and Lyn Rogan, 73 nett (one ball each) on a countback to Glynis Conroy, 73 nett but no ball.

The AWCR was 72.

The BTA was not officially awarded.

Nearest the pins: Glynnis Conroy on the 1st; Lynne Guise on the 4th; Judith Phillips on the 6th; Cathy Kelly on the 11th; and Cherrie Phillips on the 15th.

Thanks to all our sponsors for the nearest the pins competition, you can have a lucky drive even if the rest of our score is a shocker!

Last Friday, Captain Kaye, handicapper Colleen and President Liz went to Wellington for the WDLGA Annual General Meeting to learn about the Slope rating system which will come into effect from 2012.

Stage one of the implementation begins in February 2010, which is just around the corner.

The Slope system, used throughout the USA provides a means of adjusting a player’s handicap to the rated difficulty of each course, so you might play-off 24 at Parkes, but at Narromine you may have your handicap adjusted to 19.

(These are purely examples as no courses have as yet been rated for difficulty, but it seems to be a fairer indication of a player’s true ability).

It is hoped that all country courses will have been rated by the end of 2011.

Each club can have a maximum of five courses for the men, the ladies are suggesting that a longer (championship) course rating and a shorter course be included.

This could be used for charity days, fun events, etc, and once marked, could be made of excellent use.

Starting from February 2010, a player’s handicap will be calculated on the basis “rolling averages”.

Taking your last 20 handicappable events (not Ambrose or foursomes), you find your 10 best scores and by applying a formula (no calculator needed) convert these to current handicap.

Of course this method applies best to people who play regularly, as it is intended to provide a much more accurate picture of your playing ability.

In the USA the “rolling averages” are changed monthly, but WGNSW thinks that a fortnightly adjustment might be better, especially if you play two or three times a week.

In the USA there are no such things as sand green courses, so it will be interesting to see how the system adapts to those.

Some small club with only a dozen or so players were concerned that they don’t have a computer, but if there are only a few players the calculation won’t take very long.

If every player keeps her yellow handicap card filled out after every game, she will have no trouble keeping her “rolling averages” going.

(By the way, my handicap showed I should get three shots back, but Colleen won’t do it, as the system doesn’t come in until February).

Today’s event is a stableford for Westcott’s Retravisions trophy and Saturday is our last official event of the season with the final round of the Ethel Kenyon stableford competition, sponsored by Margaret Hogan.

Next Wednesday, November 4, is the President’s vs Captain’s stableford.

Normal golf tee times apply, and a delayed draw will be made for the teams.

At 7pm for 7.30pm, we will have our end-of-year party, with the theme “Flower Power”.

As it is being catered for, we need names and money ($16 per head) by Saturday at the latest.

Our silver team girls go to Dubbo on Friday 6 November, and we wish them all the best.

At the AGM I managed to gather names and subscriptions for Veterans from 19 people, but any other people who wish to renew, please post your $2 in the desk in an envelope with your name on it to be current for 2010.

If you aren’t on the register, you can’t play in Veterans’s events next year.

Finally, congratulations to our ladies champion, Lynne Guise who has been nominated for a Parkes Australia Day Sporting Award on the basis of consistency and excellence over a very long period of time.

Apart from her brilliance of play, her sportsmanship and positive attitude make her a pleasure to play golf with.

Don’t forget that the Lady Golfer’s have been courteously invited to play in the Men’s 18 hole events on Saturday’s during the summer months, and that we can play in the chicken run on Wednesday’s, so see you there!
