An impressive 20 minute period of football after half time gave Parkes a 36-18 win over the Cowboys in Wellington yesterday.
The coaching staff were delighted with the win which came without the services of Country representative Dennis Moran.
“Winning in Wellington is very difficult as they are a tough, physical side,’ coach Will Harris said.
“However, our guys played excellent football at times and gutsed out a good win.”
With Moran out of the side, Epi Neiyoko slotted into dummy half and opened the scoring with a strong run from the base of the ruck.
Wellington hit back to trail 6-4 before both teams played some good, solid football throughout the first half.
Zander Peden broke the deadlock and gave the Spacemen a 12-4 lead at the break.
Harris was not happy with his side’s completion rate and the Spacemen responded with a try blitz to seal the game after half time.
Justin Stevenson’s 40/20 kick put Parkes on the attack and skipper James Hunt barged over next to the posts.
Semisi Tora then made a big run after a Brad Waser offload and from the next play, he also crashed over for a 24-4 lead.
Wellington scored after a couple of penalties but a big break from Brad Sanders allowed Keaton Harris to deliver a nice ball to Steven Dunn who scored.
From the ensuing kick off Parkes were in again as Brendan Sense made it 36-8 after a strong run from Ilisoni Vonometeiratu and the game was sewn up.
Wellington scored a couple of late tries to bring the score back to 36-18.
Reserve grade and under 18s both went to the Cowboys, 22-18 and 20-18.
