Parkes Public School has become Western PSSA tennis champions for the first time. During an enthralling match against Calare Public in Orange last Monday, parents, supporters and their teacher Mrs Leanda Earsman were kept on the edges of their seats almost literally.
The match finished a tie with the score card reading four sets all and 38 games all.
Parkes Public players started slowly with both Tom Galvin and Mitch Baker losing their singles matches after initially leading.
Isabelle Evans also went down in a hard fought tiebreak while Bec Kiley put a win on PPS side with an accomplished performance.
The boys came good in the doubles and turned around their earlier matches to secure victory while the girls also managed a win so the score was sitting at three sets all with two mixed doubles to play.
Mitch and Isabelle couldn’t produce their doubles form and went down while Tom and Bec were left to try and win 6/3 or better for a victory.
The score finished 6/4 in Parkes Public’s favour but this meant a tie.
The rule book was found and it was the Number 1 mixed doubles pairs that had to battle it out again.
Tom and Bec took to the court while everyone else could hardly stand the tension at the indoor centre. They played very well under the pressure and eventually won the set 7/5 much to the pleasure of the support crew.
Special mention to the efforts of Bec Kiley who won all four sets and deservedly so as she has put in many extra hours of coaching and practice during the term.
Parkes Public is now into the final eight teams in NSW PSSA Victor Kelly Cup knockout and will take on Riverina winners Young Public School this Friday on neutral courts in Grenfell.
The match must be played before the end of term. Tom and Mitch are both tied up with hockey duties until Thursday.
Unfortunately Isabelle is unable to play due to netball commitments so Emily Thomson will come into the team.
Young Public will prove a formidable opponent though as they have two strong Riverina representatives in their team.
