Parkes junior squash players have returned from the Green Shield competition in Grafton with a state title under their belts.
In total, 11 players from the Parkes Services Squash Centre competed, with the under 13s contingent winning their division.
The Green Shield is a prestigious tournament that involves teams from the North Coast, Hunter, Sydney, Canberra and Western competing.
The Western team was made up of 27 juniors, making Parkes’ representation of 11 an excellent achievement, particularly compared to bigger centres such as Orange and Dubbo.
Players are grouped into teams of four and split into 11, 13, 15 and 17 year age groups for boys and girls.
The Parkes contingent consisted of Nicole Tolhurst (17s), Eddie Poon, Brenton Nightingale, Blaze Tanks (15s), Kristen Nightingale, Ashleigh Tolhurst, Nikita Noakes, Shanna Nock (13s), Katie Healey, Kacey Nightingale and Chris Tolhurst (11s).
The best result came from the 13s girls with Western winning their age group - making them the best team in the state.
The Western team was made up entirely of Parkes players, which makes the Parkes girls’ achievement even more meritorious.
The 11s girls also performed extremely well despite being a player short.
They came second in their age group, with Katie Healey (No 1 for the team) going through the tournament without dropping a game.
Kacey Nightingale also surprised herself by winning a match, which was a great effort as Kacey is only seven and was playing against 11 year olds.
The boys and Nicole performed extremely well against tough opposition and did well to win about half their matches.
Overall, Western ended up third, which was an improved result from last year’s effort.
A huge thank you is extended to the Parkes Services Club for their continued support of junior squash.
Brenton, Kristen, Blaze and Nicole are back in Grafton this week to compete in the CHS state titles as part of the Western team.
