Team captain Bill Burke could not hide his excitement when the announcement was made at last Monday’s presentation night.
Burke stated that the perpetual trophy would sit proudly amongst all his other trophies, namely wooden spoons and awards for being furthest from the pins.
However, he did thank all his team members - son Tim, Warren Blatch, Ron Jackson, Tim Baker and Tim McCabe for their efforts and he thanked the three miners who helped out during the year.
Burke also praised all teams for their participation and he paid special thanks to runners-up All Settlers for their huge effort.
Both Burke and All Settlers team captain Robert Cheney, thanked the Golf Club for their organisation of the event and both praised the club for changing the team competition so that players had a week to play matches as opposed to the old competition.
Cheney also congratulated his team members who showed plenty of enthusiasm throughout the course of the competition - Josh Cheney, Dave Stevenson, Josh Fisher, Rory Sheridan and Bob Hunt.
The individual competitions proved close and in the handicapped players section just six shots separated the leading half a dozen players.
Gideon Van Zyl was crowned the winner after his 10 best rounds totalled 342 nett while the runner-up Robert Rae was three shots behind on 345.
He was closely followed by Phil Bishop on 347, with Dean Powter, Lynette Van Zyl and Warren Blatch all finishing on 348.
In the non-handicapped section, a late burst by Paul Massurit saw him declared the victor on 338.5 some 4.5 shots in front of David Hansen who had led from Round 1.
Winners from the final round were Warren Blatch on 30 nett for the handicapped golfers and Glen Tight on 29.5 nett for the non-handicapped players.
Ball winners were: Terry Hanson 30.5; Bill Burke, Jenny Ward 31.5; Mike Wood 32.5; Rory Sheridan, Simon Ellis and Paul Massurit 33.
