Local Government touch carnival a major success

03 Mar, 2010 08:45 AM
Regional teams claimed four of the six divisions at a highly successful 18th Annual National Touch Carnival in Parkes on Saturday.

Sponsored for the second year by Country Energy, the event attracted a record 37 teams and 800 visitors in men’s and mixed divisions.

Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, Blue Mountains, Mudgee and Gundegai were new teams this year.

The 98 games on a picturesque Cheney Park playing surface generated 1022 tries and not one send off, testament of the spirit of the event.

First time performers Mudgee and Gundagai, together with Forbes and Temora were regional winners with Marrickville and Strathfield the best of the city slickers.

Wagga Wagga yet again were rated best presented team.

Prior to the start of play a minute’s silence for the memory of former long serving Parkes Mayor Robert Wilson OAM who was instrumental in the event’s formation in 1993.

This is the 3rd year Wingecarribee has participated in this event and on behalf of Wingecarribee I would like to congratulate Michael Greenwood and Parkes Council for hosting a well organised carnival. We have had a great time and it seems to be getting better every year. It has been fun showing off our talent or lack off on the field but also making friends with other councils. Thanks again to everyone invovled in the organisation. Wingecarribee is always looking for carnivals to participate in so please let us know, email is wscmail@wsc.nsw.gov.au. Thanks, Carly Wingecarribee Wombats

First year for Blue Mountains Council attending this event and we enjoyed it thoroughly. Thanks to Parkes Council and all the organisers for a very well run and professional event. Thanks also to the people of Parkes for their hospitality. The team had a great time. With a bit of luck (and training) we hope to be back next year. Mike
