Well, it’s March already and last Wednesday saw the opening day of the Lady Golfer’s competition season.
A small but enthusiastic group started out at 9.30am in a club sponsored Stableford event.
Trish Wyatt gave her new sticks their first outing, and Jenny Hoy and Leonie Thompson were warmly welcomed into the veteran golfers ranks.
Winner on the day was Denise Charlton, with a massive 44 points! ‘Snip snip’ said Colleen, I’m not sure what Denise’s new handicap will be.
Runner-up with 38 points was Leonie Thompson, followed by Liz Matthews 37 and Lesley Fisher 35.
The CCR was 72, and the course, though a bit heavy underfoot has really benefited from the rain.
Nearest the pin winners: 1st (L and R Maxwell) was Liz Matthews; Lesley Fisher, 4th (Parkes Leagues Club); Liz Matthews, 6th (Dunford’s Chemist); Colleen Flynn, 11th (Parkes Squash Centre) and Denise Charlton, 15th (Parkes Newsagency, a new sponsor).
Thanks to all who provide trophies for this, even if you don’t win the event, it’s possible to have a lucky drive and win a ball.
On Saturday a Stableford event for the first Ethel Kenyon round and Frankie Cock’s trophy was played (in very hot conditions).
Cobar visitor Suellen Dunne found the grass a bit of a challenge.
Winner on the day was Kaye Jones, 38 points, on a countback from Lesley Fisher 38, followed by Helen Clark 37, and Ann Goodie 34, one ball each. (Shame about those one or two missed putts, Lesley!).
Nearest the pins: Cherrie Phillips on the 1st (Lyn and Mick Rogan); Lesley Fisher, 4th (Parkes Pharmacy); Helen Clark, 6th (Telescope Tyres); Lynne Guise, 11th (Tony’s Golf House) and Glynnis Conroy, 15th (Trish and Ray Wyatt). Thanks to all the sponsors.
The BTA award donated by Ann Goodie was won by our visitor, Suellen, who says she’ll be back to fight another day.
Today’s event, sponsored by Parkes Mensland is a stableford, the first round of the Pat Turnbull Salver.
On Saturday it will be the first round of the WGNSW Medal and Club medal, a qualifier for the Giles Bowl. Trophy donated by Barbara Donnelly.
On March 17, the first Wednesday Medal round will be played, with putting in conjunction, sponsored by Chester the Chick. It, too is a qualifying round for the Giles Bowl.
Saturday (20th), is a stableford event sponsored by Janice Cassidy’s Hair Salon, and on the following Wednesday it will be another stableford, sponsored by Shirley Murray.
Saturday (27th), is the Members’ Party Day, sponsored by Parkes Cellars. All lady golfers are encouraged to join in this special event. $15 per player, more information in future reports.
The final event for March is an 18 hole par event, sponsored by the club.
Trish Wyatt and Liz Matthews will travel to Wellington in late March to find out the latest on amalgamation and also progress reports on the new Slope handicap system.
The replacement lockers have finally arrived, and there are still a few available. They are much bigger than the old ones, so if you would like one, please contact Trish Wyatt.
As we get back into the routine of golf, can I please remind everyone to fill in all divots you come across, (whether you made them or not).
On Saturday heaps of sand buckets were used on gouges made by someone practising approach shots from the fairway. At least fill in the divots if you do this. If you don’t look after the course, you won’t have a course to look after.
