It was a promising start for the Central West Colts in their first hit-out of the year on Saturday.
The representative squad took on their Gordon counterparts in a trial and downed the Sydney side 34-15 in Orange.
The two sides went try-for-try for most of the game before the home side put on three unanswered tries to get the trial win.
Central West coach John Hamilton was happy with his side’s first game of the year.
“That’s what they’ve been looking for - having a game,” Hamilton said.
“It was good. It was interesting. It was a bit disorganised. We certainly didn’t lack any commitment.”
It was 10-all at the end of the first 20-minute quarter with Parkes second rower Lewis Dwyer bagging a double for Central West.
Gordon took a 15-10 lead at the main break but the hosts were up 22-15 after three quarters thanks to tries to Matt Saul and Orange City’s Joe Alexander as well as a conversion from Bathurst’s Ben McNiven.
Central West continued to improve in the final period with Orange City’s Taylor Smith and Saul crossing the try-line.
Being their first game of the season, Hamilton said there were things to work on.
“I think we’re just committing too many blokes to the breakdown, which is then leaving us short to run our next phases,” Hamilton said.
The Central West Colts will play their next trial on Saturday in Cowra against the Canberra Royals Colts.
CENTRAL WEST 34 (Lewis Dwyer 2, Matt Saul 2, Joe Alexander, Taylor Smith tries; Ben McNiven 2 conv) def GORDON 15 (Andrew Sears, Steve Hayter, Scott Purcell tries).
