 Cricket’s decider!

Cricket’s decider!

19 Mar, 2010 08:27 AM
The grand finals of the Parkes cricket competitions tomorrow bring together arch rivals in both A and B grades.

In both matches, sides which have finished runners-up in the past few grand finals will be hoping to finally break their run of outs.

Railway and Cambridge have clashed upteen times in the A grade premiership decider in recent seasons, and both have claimed premierships.

Cambridge are the defending champions and red-hot favourites to make it back-to-back titles, despite the fact each side has won two of their four clashes to date.

They have great depth in both batting and bowling.

But Railway have a couple of big-match performers and if one – or both – get going, they could win the game on their own.

Anthony Heraghty appears the player most likely to affect the result.

The Cambridge opening batsmen has had a stellar season, especially with the bat, hitting four centuries (including three in the Saturday competition).

He scores quickly and a big innings will result in a huge score for Cambridge.

Heraghty though, is not the only one in the side who hits big scores.

Cameron Rosser has played at the very highest level but by his standards, has not had the best of seasons. He is due for a big score and it could be Railway who suffers as a result.

Martin Crowe, Luke Clarke, Andrew Johns and Shane Hodges have also been quieter than normal and will be hoping to explode tomorrow.

The bowling attack is also of high quality with Clinton Hawke one of the best going around in the bush.

He will carry a big responsibility but has a capable ally in Matt Hetherington who is enjoying a good season.

Aaron Wilkie is only young but coming along in leaps and bounds, while John Albert and Ben Howard (middle-order batsmen) ensure morale in the side is kept at a high with their antics.

Railway however, are not intimidated by their better-credentialed opposition and will be confident of repeating last week’s impressive win over Coachman Demons in the final.

They have been runners-up in the past two grand finals and acknowledge they look terrible in dresses.

They are keen to break their long drought between titles.

Ben Hawken is a very impressive batsman and if he gets going, is difficult to remove. Indeed his performance could well determine how the match goes.

Another player who will have a huge influence is veteran all-rounder, Phil Dunford capable of destroying teams with either bat or ball – or both!

Allan Jewell is in the middle of a purple patch with the bat and he will hope to continue his consistent scoring.

Cambridge will be glad to see the back of him with the ball, and will hope he is back in the pavilion without too much damage having been caused.

Paul Dunford has also enjoyed his games against Cambridge this season, bagging plenty of runs.

Twins Myles and Blake Smith are learning their craft as opening batsmen and will relish the challenge against the fancied Cambridge attack, as will Darren Thompson another promising player in Alex Umbers.

Railway have brought along some young bowlers this season, and all are developing nicely. In fact, the bowling has possibly been their strength.

Obviously though Phil Dunford will be the thrust of the attack, with Andrew Britt who is coming back from uni studies to play.

Paul Dunford also rolls over his left-armers, while Darren Thompson, and the Smith boys will bowl.

Alex Umbers is developing nicely as an off-spinner and he could play a bigger role than he anticipates.

TIP – It will be yet another classic confrontation between two fierce rivals, but Cambridge’s depth in batting should prove the difference.

Bowling Club will start red-hot favourites to beat Grand in the B grade grand final, but having been runner-up for the last four seasons will not be taking anything for granted.

Bowling Club have won all four games between the two sides this season and have only lost two games.

But good form has not helped them in past seasons and they are determined to beat their ‘bridesmaid’ tag and finally get the title at their fifth successive attempt.

Their opening bowling attack of Brett Hutchings and Neil Ward are as good as any in Parkes, and youngster Shaun Bateson is developing beautifully as an economical back-up bowler.

His father Steve is also quite handy and Sheldon Orr has been around for years, still with the ability of swinging a game.

The batting hinges around captain, Matt Swindle, Aaron Gaffey, Tim Dillon who hit a big score recently, David Driver who appears to value his wicket more than his life, and the bowlers mentioned who also can score freely.

Another youngster, Mitch Hutchings is outstanding in the field and creates run-out chances out of nothing.

The nucleus of the Bowling Club side has been together during their horror run of four grand final losses so are seasoned campaigners.

In contrast, Grand is a side mixing youth and experience – a handful of seniors and the rest schoolkids.

They had a most impressive victory in last week’s final and are on a high and looking to convert that into a premiership.

Grand have enjoyed success in recent seasons and rely heavily on a team effort to get their victories.

They will be buoyed by the return of three key players who missed last week’s game – opening bowlers (and capable batsmen), Andrew Francis and Chris Scott, and consistent young batsmen, Cameron Standen.

Doug Keith and Adam Parker will also make their presence felt, while veteran skipper, David Parker can determine an outcome with his wily tactics.

TIP – Bowling Club look too strong all round the park and should break through (finally) for a well deserved premiership. But they will definitely know they have been in a battle!
