Burrell racing to big future

01 Sep, 2008 09:38 AM
Ben Burrell is on the path to a career in Moto-X racing and this week he will get a taste of international competition.

Ben is currently in Greece travelling with the Australian team at the International Six Day Enduro (ISDE)event.

The 15-year old looks destined to follow in the footseps of his father Paul who rode on the professional circuit.

Ben won the Australian Off-Road Championships junior lights and outright junior divisions this year.

Such was his dominance that he won the outright junior title by 21 points - an amazing achievement.

His talent has been identified by the Yamaha Ballards team and they have taken him to Greece for the ISDE that starts today.

Ben will observe this year but is expected to ride next year in the event that sees competitors ride their bikes through all sorts of conditions for up to eight hours a day.

‘The Enduro is like the Olympics of the Moto-X world,’ Ben’s father Paul said.

‘About 30 countries compete and it is one of the toughest events on the calender.

‘Ben will learn a lot just by travelling with the team and be ready to ride next year.’

Paul knows how tough the event is having ridden the ISDE in Czechoslavakia in 1991.

He is also in Greece for the ISDE, working as part of the support crew for another Australian team.

Ben has been riding motorbikes since the age of three and is extremely committed in his training.

‘It is one of the toughest sports in the world physically,’ Paul said.

‘You get a full body workout the whole time you’re on the bike so you have to stay very fit.

‘Ben trains for about four hours a day on the bike or pushbike, running and doing strength work.

‘He is very focussed on riding professionally and he deserves all the success that comes his way.

‘Junior riders are getting quicker and quicker these days and I’m really looking forward to 2010 when Ben can compete against the seniors.’
