Brian likely to lose two shots

14 Jan, 2009 07:53 AM
Club stalwart Brian Hogan - a great supporter of many organisations and sporting bodies - completely blitzed the field in the first round of the BWR Accountants and Advisors 2009 summer competition last Saturday.

Hogan finished three points clear of the excellent field of 72 starters in recording 44 stableford points and as such will now see his handicap tumble by at least two shots.

The 2009 BWR Accountants and Advisors sponsored summer competition allows players to drop their worst two rounds of the scheduled five round competition which will be played during January and February.

Ball winners from Saturday’s round were 41 Bob Barter; 40 Reg Davison, Paul Morgan and Vince Kelly; 39 Tom Casey, Allan Affleck and Ray Maxwell; 38 Laurie Wakefield and Roy Bell and surviving the countback on 37 points was Michael Mitchelson.

Club captain Phil Barnard recorded a magnificent eagle 3 on the par 5, 7th hole after using a driver, 4 iron and a precision chip from one metre off the green in winning six golf balls.

In the nearest the pin awards the Linfox Australia jackpot now stands at 26 balls after last Saturday when Gai Mitchelson’s tee shot finished 345cms from the pin which is outside the required distance for claiming either all or 20 per cent of the jackpot.

Other nearest the pin recipients were Laurie Wakefield at 131cms on the Dirt Doctor Landscaping 4th hole, Chris Goodie after a well struck 4 iron to the Telescope Tyres and Batteries 6th hole finished 142cms away, Cliff Dunn on the Harvey Norman 11th hole at 171cms and Garry Phipps superb shot to within 180 centimetres on the tough Westlime sponsored 15th hole.

In the day’s final awards Peter Magill took out the Miskell’s Tyrepower 9th hole in two shots at 180cms and on the members 18th hole Dave Harwood at 61cms claimed the cash voucher with his second shot and the dreaded BAKM Bradmans award went to an unlucky Neil McGrath.

Sunday saw an excellent field contest the nine hole two person ambrose event with Northparkes Mine employees Blair Scott and Dennis Howard taking out the event on 30 ¼ nett.

Father and son combination of the two Laurie Wakefields, was one shot back on 31 ¼ nett in the runner up position just ¼ shot clear of third placegetters Ian Westcott and Jason Kennedy.

The dreaded Bradman’s Award went to Douglas Keith and Brent Tucker while Matthew Barnden at 380cms took out the nearest the pin award and Matthew’s wife Tracy Barnden won the ladies long drive and Laurie Wakefield (junior) the mens.

Wednesday’s nine hole chicken run continues to attract excellent fields and this was certainly the case last week when Mick Miller fired the day’s best score of 23 points.

In the handicap section Don Kirwan recorded 21 + 2 for 23, Keirin McIlwain and Mike Richardson both on 20 + 2 for 22, Cliff Cowell 19 + 3 for 22 and Ross Smith 20 + 1 for 21 .

All won chickens and former Parkes resident and now member of Wauchope Peter Townsend claimed the lucky draw.

The club’s 2009 program of events has now been compiled and any member who would like to donate a trophy is urged to contact either Phil Barnard or Paul Thomas before next Saturday.

Members who wish to partake in this year’s droughtbusters golf trip to Sydney visiting Ashlan, The Coast and Asquith Golf Clubs are urged to fill in the application forms and pay the appropriate fees this weekend.

At the time of writing this report only a couple of places remain open for the trip which commences on Friday 27 Feburary at a cost of $415 which covers all golf, accommodation at the Aspire Hotel in Ultimo, coach travel by Western Roadlines and a complimentary golf shirt to mark the occasion.

A big congratulations is extended to the staff at G R Services and Westlime who banded together to upgrade the roadway through the centre of the course.

All patrons who utilise the course especially the workforce of the club, charity organisations and other sporting bodies who utilise the club’s halfway house at the 4th hole will benefit immensely from this major work carried out.

A job well done and a big thank you to all involved - to both G R Services and Westlime for their wonderful donation.

This weekend on the course members will contest the second round of the BWR Chartered Accountants and Advisors summer competition on Saturday while on Sunday it’s a nine hole medley stableford competition.
