 Another great win

Another great win

12 May, 2008 09:38 AM
Parkes has continued its impressive start to the season with a 42-18 win over Nyngan Tigers in Parkes yesterday.

On the back of solid performances by the guest Fijian players, the Spacemen led 24-6 at half time and went on with the job in the second half for their second win in three starts.

The Parkes forwards turned in a wonderful defensive effort to lay the platform for the win but there was some great attack as well, with several long-range tries.

Parkes still needs to tighten up control of the ball, completing only 20 of its 34 sets, but coach, Will Harris is delighted with the commitment of his players.

‘Everyone was really ready to play today and it showed. The defence was fantastic, and if that is on song, you are going to win more games than not.’

A good crowd watched Parkes turn in excellent efforts in all three grades, having a 32-32 draw in reserve grade and a convincing 48-6 win in Under 18s.

But the first grade win was what everyone was really thrilled with.

Captain James (Bob) Hunt was inspirational, being involved in a couple of tries and making 37 tackles, while second rower Semisi Tora (Semi) had a huge game.

Dale Rogers in the second row was also strong, with 29 tackles, big Heamani Lavaka made 20 tackles and had 15 hit ups, Steve Witherow and Craig Cole were excellent coming off the bench, and Danny Read - despite being in the centres - made 23 tackles and had 16 hit ups.

Read also had a kicking game he will long remember, converting all seven tries from all parts of the ground.

The first grade game was only six minutes old when captain Hunt set up Fijian Epi Neiyoko (Epi) for the first try.

Danny Read converted and kicked another conversion 10 minutes later when Alipate Tani (Ali) scored after a great kick from half Tom Clyburn - score 12-0.

Nyngan hit back to make it 12-6 but Epi scored his second try to stretch the lead.

With barely minutes until half time, Read and Jeremy Clarke combined down the short side to put Corey Monkerud over in the corner - half time 24-6.

Nyngan quickly got back into the game with a converted try shortly after the break, but Hunt off-loaded for Jeremy Clarke to cross, 30-12.

Again Nyngan came back after a mistake from Parkes (30-18) but it was Parkes who finished full of running, with the Fijian connection prominent.

Semi made a 40 metre burst and put Pati over near the posts, and then Semi did it all himself to score following a 40 metres bust.
