The Parkes Rugby League Football Club (PRLFC) and Parkes Rugby Union Football Club (PRUFC) are combining to stage a pre-season touch football carnival with teams from both codes throughout the western area participating.
The carnival will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at Pioneer Oval, Parkes.
The first game will be held at 9am and the final will be at 5pm.
Teams will be competing for the Northparkes Shield, sponsored by Northparkes Mine.
Of particular interest will be the clash between last year’s Group 11 premiers Dubbo CYMS and last year’s Group 10 premiers Mudgee Dragons, as well as a game between the Spacemen (league) and the Boars (union).
The PRLFC Committee came up with the idea when looking at pre-season training and trial options as well as fundraising to kick off the club’s season.
As a first of its kind, this event is set to become an annual date locked in on the pre-season calendar for League and Union alike which has the potential to attract up to 500 people to the town.
Competing for over $10,000 in total prizemoney, it is set to be a very exciting day of competition and a great opportunity for all involved. With trophy and prizemoney up for grabs in a goal-kicking competition and 100m sprint which will decide the fastest man in western football.
All first-division sides will compete in the open division, while second division sides will compete in the trophy division.
Apart from Northparkes Mine, the event is also supported by WIN Television, McDonald’s, Tooheys.
After the match there will be entertainment at the Cambridge Hotel, with comedians, a band and barbecue dinner. Entry is $15 (pre-purchased at Cambridge Hotel before close of business on Friday) or $20 at the door.
There will be complimentary beer or wine on arrival.
All proceeds will go to the Parkes Spacemen.
The Spacemen will also be holding a season launch formal ball on Friday, April 30 at 6.30pm.
Tickets are $60 and are available at Parkes Leagues Club.
