A “disappointed” stand-in Parkes First XI captain Peter Yelland is vowing to bounce back after yesterday’s Grinsted Cup loss against Cowra.
This was the first time Parkes has lost the Cup in two years and Yelland says complacency following his team’s success in reaching the top four in the SCG Cup could be the possible cause.
Cowra yesterday won the toss and elected to bat at Woodward Oval, managing to build up 160 runs.
Mick Tuartale top-scored with 36, backed up with 33 from C Day. Parkes’ Phil Dunford and Clinton Hawke did their team proud in the bowling arena, with figures of 6-32 off 16 overs (five maidens) and 1-34 off 12 overs (four maidens) respectively.
In reply, Parkes fell just 11 runs short of Cowra’s target, being bowled out for 149. Number 8 batsman Nathan Munday established a fighting partnership to end up with 50 runs. The next highest scorers were Alan Jewell (32), Scott Knights (26) and Peter Yelland (20). Everyone else scored in the single figures.
Best bowlers for Cowra in the run chase were N Thorn (6-45 off 19 overs) and D Henderson (3-38 off 11 overs).
Stand-in skipper Yelland said he was “filthy” and “disappointed” at the loss.
“We didn’t do the basics. It is very disappointing. We hold the Grinsted Cup in very high esteem and now we won’t have a chance to play in that comp until next season,” Yelland said.
“I hope we can bounce back. Our next game is against Condobolin in two weeks for a Lachlan Cricket Council game. We’ll set our sights on the Lachlan finals now.”
He said his side could have done much better in batting, bowling and fielding and especially basic catches. He said about three basic catches were dropped during the game.
“It really is a kick in the backside for us. We haven’t been playing well since the last SCG Cup game. It’s possible that we got complacent after we did well there,” Yelland said.
“Cowra was just simply the better team and we had one of those days. They batted, fielded and bowled better.”
