Parkes Cricket enjoys its finest hour

02 Nov, 2009 08:41 AM
Parkes cricket yesterday enjoyed arguably its finest hour ever, chasing down 298 on Woodward Park to beat Bathurst in the final over of a pulsating SCG Cup encounter.

In the most measured and committed of run chases ever enjoyed on the hallowed turf that is the home of Parkes cricket, every Parkes batsmen contributed to a cause that would have been beyond virtually any side in NSW country cricket.

But Cameron Rossers outfit persisted and eventually scampered to victory in the first ball of the final over for the loss of five wickets.

Fittingly a gaggle of car horns by the 300 patrons greeted the unlikely victory that will live long in the annals of not only Parkes cricket but the coveted SCG Cup competition.

For the winners the cherished dream of an appearance in January on the SCG remains alive with Parkes to confront the winner of the Dubbo/Mudgee contest on Sunday week.

A much improved and more disciplined Bathurst side retreated home last night wondering how they lost a contest which produced 599 runs in 99.1 overs on a superb cricket wicket prepared by the Sports Council grounds staff.

Skipper Ross Gardner contributed 74 at the top of the order and number five Josh Toole an even more imposing 104 with four sixes and 10 fours as he smashed the Parkes attack to all parts of an immaculate outfield.

The shellshocked Parkes stack struggled without Israel Symington and seven bowlers were tried in a Valiant effort to stem the constant flow of runs.

Evergreen Phil Dunford, surely among the finest of central west all rounders ever produced, earned 2-45 and first change Jack Murray probed for 3-62 from nine, but the locals appeared unable to collar the Bathurst batting effort.

At 3-152 from 32 overs, a score of around 260 appeared likely but the visitors appreciably lifted the run rate, the intensity and the stakes in the run to the line to reach an imposing 8-298 in 50 overs.

Parkes started an improbably run chase with confidence and aplomb, Heraghty contributing a typical quickmfire 25, with one six and four fours, to add 44 for the first wicket with Peter Yelland.

Skipper Rosser came and went for 12 for 2-62 but then the persistent Yelland and newcomer Waddell, who scored a stylish 80 for Reedy Creek in club cricket on Saturday to earn a call up for Tim Wright, took the score to 133 before Yelland was run out for 49.

Waddell went shortly after for 37 and at 4-144 in the 29th over Parkes appeared in grave trouble.

Enter Ben Hawken who stroked five fours and a six in the same grace and style that marked his grand father Ron to lift Parkes back in contention.

Hawken was run out from a direct hit for 5-222 with just 11 overs as the WG Grace lookalike Dunford strolled to the crease to join a very comfortable Scott Knights.

The veteranand the youngster played with composure and vision as the 5-228 off 40 became 5-265 from 45 and ultimately 5-301 as victory was achieved from the first ball of the final over against a dejected Bathurst outfit..

Knights was simply superb at the business end of the contest, the left hander stroking the ball to all parts of the field and running brilliantly between the wickets as the last pair added 79 in 11 overs to clinch a famous victory.

Dunford too did well, his unbeaten 36 featuring a towering six over long on at a critical time as the match was there for the taking.

Umpires Warwick Wheeldon and Wal Chatman deserved plaudits for their contribution to one of the most memorable of run chases that cricket has provided in this district for many many years.

Match summary…Parkes 5-301 off 49.1 Overs (Knights 62 n, Dunford 36 no, Yelland 49, Hawken 42, N Dennis 2-42) defeated Bathurst 8-298(Toole 104, Gardner 74, Murray 3-62, Dunford 2-450 by five wickets with five balls to spare; SCG Cup round one.
