Year 2 students from Mrs Kerrie Peden’s class 2P at Parkes Public School ended 2009 knowing more about environmentally friendly and sustainable gardening.
Throughout Term 4 Mrs Peden with the support of parent Anthony Morley established a garden whilst at the same time educating the students in a practical way everything from eco-systems, solar energy, pollution, water-cycles, the benefits of earth worms and composting.
“We were fortunate to have Mr Morley on board who talked to the children on plant selection in establishing a drought tolerant garden,” Mrs Peden said.
“Our students were also explained the importance of composting as well as water evaporation.”
Under the guidance of both Mrs Peden and Mr Morley a garden was established on a bare patch of land opposite their classroom complete with a water feature pumped by solar energy.
The garden was finished off with a mosaic plaque that was made by a student teacher.
