Despite calls to replace some school zone signs because they do not comply with the Australian Standard, Parkes signs are fully compliant.
The NRMA wants the NSW Government to finish replacing all school zone signs with the NRMA-recommended fluorescent lime colour after an inspection of school zone signs revealed one in five do not comply with the Australian Standard.
However, there are no problems in Parkes with the council and Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) ensuring local signs are clearly visible.
“The maintenance of school zones including signage, is delivered via a partnership between councils and Roads and Maritime Services,” Parkes Shire Council Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Mel Suitor said.
“The condition of school zone signs is monitored and signs are replaced as required.
“School zone signs in the Parkes Shire were reviewed and replaced in 2008 and are therefore still in good condition.
“That said, there was a recent upgrade at Parkes Public School to accommodate the installation of flashing lights in Bushman Street.”
The zone in Bushman Street operates continuously from 8pm to 4pm, which is why flashing lights were installed.
NRMA Motoring and Services Group CEO Tony Stuart said of 71 signs tested in just one area, 15 were faded and simply not up to scratch as an effective warning to motorists that they were entering a school zone.
“We are pleased that progress has been made since the last audit. However almost three years on one in five unsafe signs is still too many if we are going to keep children safe,” Mr Stuart said.
“Many of the signs we tested were way below the specifications – some are so old that the yellow colour has almost completely faded away.
“Others have been upgraded to the fluorescent lime colour we endorse but are of little use hidden behind trees.
“You can't put a price on the safety of children, adults and drivers around school zones.
“Everyone on the road should report fading or hidden school zone signs to the RMS.”
