Show still proving very popular after 125 years

02 Sep, 2005 07:05 AM
This week's 125th annual Parkes Show certainly lived up to the title of the 'greatest show west of the Blue Mountains' with huge crowds on both the main days.

Overall takings totalled $70,666 which included increased membership for the second successive year.

Gate takings of $31,810, whilst $460 less than last year, were more than made up for in increased membership.

The 125th staging - a milestone in itself - was historic in more ways than one.

Officially opened by Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC on Tuesday, the show will also go down in history as the first staging to have the fireworks spectacular postponed due to bad weather.

Strong winds that hit the district on Tuesday night forced committee members to call off the fireworks - much to the disappointment of the thousands present.

The fireworks were re-scheduled for Wednesday night.
