Two new faces with the Parkes Shire Council are new Grants Officer, David Towns and trainee, Luke Nash.
David is a Sydney man, growing up in the city’s inner-west.
‘I studied environmental science at university and before moving to Parkes, I was the Catchment Management Officer for Kogarah City Council in Sydney,’ he said this week.
‘The part of my previous job that I most enjoyed was working with community groups so I thought that perhaps I could do it full-time.
‘To that end I applied for the position of grants officer here at Parkes Shire Council.’
David started with council on November 28.
‘I'm finding the work really satisfying. My work is about helping the shire community access funding opportunities - from a variety of sources.
‘To do this I inform the community about all the grants and funds that are available and assist community groups and individuals with grant applications.
‘I want to ensure that applications from the Parkes Shire have the best possible chance of success,’ he said.
‘In order to improve the success rate for grant applications in the region I will be running three grant writing workshops in the Parkes Shire during February.
‘The workshops will cover the basics of finding appropriate grant providers and how to write high quality grant applications.’
David said the workshops are free and will be held in Parkes (February 7), Peak Hill (February 14) and Trundle (February 21). Places are limited but additional dates may be organised if demand is high.
David said he is really excited about getting involved in the Parkes community, and has already donned an Elvis suit for the Elvis Festival.
In his spare time, he goes bushwalking, kayaking, rock-climbing or reads.
