Men’s Shed is going strong

29 Jan, 2010 09:31 AM
The membership of Parkes Men’s Shed has now hit 150 members, with 30 to 34 members regularly enjoying the new facilities three days a week.

The resignation of Secretary Malcolm Stacey was a blow to the group, as Malcolm was instrumental in presenting successful grant applications and the instigation of men’s health programs since the inauguration in August 2007.

Trevor Gilbert has been elected as the Secretary of Parkes Men’s Shed Inc., joining the willing band on the committee.

There is a continuous program of improving facilities at the shed. Current projects include dust extraction, computer room and office, new chairs for the dining area, supports for surrounding gardens – all done by members.

Support was given to the Elvis Festival Gospel Service in provision of panels made up for dancers. Menu holders for Southern Cross Village coffee shop and a Christmas Crib for the Catholic Church created much interest.

A bus trip to Wellington Men’s Shed Expo on February 17 will give members the chance to meet up with 130 other Men’s Shed members from around the Central West. The bus limits numbers to 25, so first in best dressed. Bookings with $15 cash can be made at the shed. Enquiries to Bernie Crowe on 0418 961 242.

The next meeting on the third Monday will discuss the Father Ted event on the showground at Easter, Senior Citizens Week program with shed open day, annual street stall and raffle in Men’s Health Week and the third Men’s Health Night in June.

The Parkes Men’s Shed has proven the need in the community and the ultimate benefit to members through the camaraderie and social support in mate helping mate.

The Parkes Men’s Shed is open from 8.30am to 12 noon Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

What a day? I payed my $10.00 plus $2.00 for my cup of tea. It's the best value I've enjoyed for a long time. I'll be back again on Monday. I felt so humbled, and even a bit of envy because I had wasted 40 years + of my life fighting Information Technology. The level of professionalism is breathtaking. A senior person (sorry, can't remember who), re-introduced me to the pedestal drill, taking care that I did not injure myself, while I tried to recall my Fitting and Machining skills. The place was full of wisdom and experience. I'm also reading my first book from the Parkes Library, "training your brain for the over 50s". Yep I'm home at last. If I'm allowed I'll take some photo's next time.
