Last Elvis service for minister

09 Jan, 2012 07:54 AM
The 'Gospel Church Service' at the CountryLink Parkes Elvis Festival has evolved over the last 10 years and is now one of the highlights of the Festival.

It will be held this Sunday, January 15 at 8.30am and will be very significant as it will be the last for Uniting Church minister, Rev Tom Stuart.

Rev Stuart is leaving Parkes for a new parish, but was keen to remain long enough to conduct ‘his’ Elvis gospel service.

(Rev Stuart’s story will appear in Wednesday’s edition).

The gospel service will once again take place in the Big W car park, having outgrown its original home at the Uniting Church.

The special non-denominational church service is sponsored by Brian Anderson First National Real Estate, and is expected to attract several thousand people.

According to Rev Stuart, the service celebrates the gospel music recorded by Elvis Presley and reflects on how these songs gave insight to his faith and character.

The service has a 21st century focus complete with singing, dancing, music, digital projections and images.

From an early congregation of 40 participants nearly 3000 people now flock to this festival event.

Contributors to this year's service include the highly acclaimed tribute artist Royden Donohue, the ever popular ‘Gospel Quartet’, the Festival Feature Artist Dean Z, the amazing Lexine Solomon, Chain Reaction, Kerriean Hood, String Angel, Nixson Eduard and the Uniting Church Band.

More on Wednesday.

are urging people to arrive early and bring a chair as there will only be limited chairs available.

and favourable space is provided for people to bring their own chairs.

Generous donations in past years have meant that the Gospel Service is a central provider of funds to a child support program in East Timor (called Kids Ark). In past years the financial aid was used to provide materials for voluntary teams to establish a clean water supply, build classrooms, and the provision of medical supplies and uniforms for the children. There will be opportunity during the service to again give to this amazing ministry. Reverend Tom Stuart has also invited everyone to join him for a free morning tea after the service.
