Parkes Shire Council has requested the RTA ‘re-visits’ the Newell Highway/Mitchell Street intersection issue of installing a Give-Way sign for north-bound highway traffic merging from Mitchell Street.
It follows the tabling of a report to last week’s council meeting from the Parkes Traffic Committee.
The report stated that
vehicles – trucks in particular – when travelling
north-east in Mitchell Street and veering left into Clarinda Street, are
merging into the centre
lane and obstructing traffic heading north in Clarinda Street.
The Traffic Committee’s recommendation was for
the matter to be referred to the Roads and Traffic Authority.
The matter has been raised previously by council where the suggestion was for a Give-Way sign to be erected in Clarinda Street to allow free passage to all south-bound traffic turning right into Mitchell Street.
However, the suggestion was not considered a high priority by the RTA.
Cr Kenny McGrath believes the current problem could be addressed by the positioning of a Give-Way sign at the point where north-bound traffic turns from Mitchell Street.
“A Give-Way sign there would easily fix the problem. Can we revisit this issue with the RTA?” Cr McGrath enquired.
Mayor Ken Keith said he wasn’t sure that a Give-Way at that area
would comply with normal traffic rules.
Deputy Mayor Cr John Magill said it would be something council should be careful of.
“A Give-Way will only increase the speed of south bound traffic negotiating the Mitchell Street corner. Traffic will certainly flow at a faster rate,” Cr Magill said.
Councillors agreed to a recommendation – “That council request the
RTA to revisit the intersection of the Newell Highway and Mitchell Street regarding the installation of a Give-Way sign for north-bound Newell Highway traffic.
