Readers may recall the International Year of Astronomy (IYA) back in 2009 when the Central West Astronomical Society (CWAS) celebrated the Year by conducting a series of public viewing evenings in the main streets of towns all over the Central West.
The specific reason for choosing 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy was that it represented the 400th anniversary of Galileo Galilei pointing the newly invented telescope into the night sky for the first time.
In doing so, Galileo became the Father of Modern Astronomy.
Reminiscent of the IYA, at the CWAS’s February meeting, its current Secretary, John Sarkissian, gave a fascinating account of his pilgrimage of sorts to Florence, Italy late last year.
