Frustrations bring a laugh
My comments last week about the frustrations of travelling around Sydney apparently struck a chord with quite a few locals.
I had a few tell me they knew exactly how I felt!
Former long time local resident, Coral Wright – now down south around Albury – had a big laugh.
‘I still get the Champion Post every week and look forward to reading your ramblings.
‘I had a real belly laugh when you wrote of your frustrations in Sydney.
‘I remember so well our few trips down there. The very first time, we always seemed to end up back at Town Hall.
‘The kids kept on reminding Bernie that we had just passed by here a little while ago (Bernie is Coral’s late husband and popular former local sportsman).
‘It was very frustrating, so reading your comments brought it back and gave me a good laugh. I certainly understand why you couldn’t wait to get out of the place.’
Yep, as I said, a great place to visit, but an even better place to leave (if you can work out how to leave!)

Apparently our ‘visitor’ at home (in last week’s ramblings) was not a bilby.
I have been informed by readers that what I encountered was definitely not a bilby, but more than likely ‘an attractive’ type of mouse.
I was assured that the last reported bilby was 70 or 80 years ago and besides, they are a little smaller than a rabbit.
Neville Schrader is a man who is very informed about many subjects and he brought me in a picture of the very animal that I saw.
It was a ‘Fat-tailed Dunnart’ which are common around here, but not noticed all that often.
It is a small native mouse that is a little bigger than a normal house mouse but smaller than a rat.
They don’t venture into homes and as far as I am concerned, looked quite cute.
Certainly better than ‘meeces’ which I hate to ‘peeces!’

The movie, The Combination is creating waves around Australia.
In Sydney, the Greater Union theatres banned the movie at one point and it has generated plenty of publicity – mostly for the wrong reasons.
The Australian produced film is about ethnic life in the western suburbs of Sydney and according to all reports, is very close to what life in the area is all about – centering on the tensions between ethnic and Australian cultures.
Anyway, I am mentioning it only to inform readers that the producer is a former Parkes lad, David Field.
I have mentioned David before – he is now one of Australia’s best known actors and his latest role is as a regular in City Homicide.
But he’s appeared in just about everything Australian for the past couple of decades.
David was born and raised in Parkes – and I actually coached him in his young hockey playing days!
Name-dropper!
Probably the reason he went into acting!
David said he spent seven years bringing The Combination to the big screen and is devastated that it is being withheld from viewing, especially as how it has been attracting big crowds.
Aussies have not exactly been flocking to locally made films (except ‘Australia’) - so it’s a real pity.

There have been a few minor changes to the Champion Post in recent months - some of which have proven popular and others, not so popular.
So we are continuing to ‘tweak’ things a little to ensure we get it right for you, our readers.
One of the ‘tweakings’ will be for ‘From My Verandah’ to return to Friday’s edition as it was when it was ‘From My Desk.’
As always, if you feel there is some way we can improve your paper, don’t hesitate to contact us.
One thing for sure is we will continue to cover local comings and goings.
