Independent State MP Dawn Fardell has criticised the State Government’s response to a review by the Auditor-General into plans to privatise the electricity sector.
Mrs Fardell said with the sale supposed to generate multi-billions of dollars, the 22-page review released today was hardly comprehensive.
She was also concerned about suggestions the Government may recall Parliament as early as next week to push through the sale.
‘The NSW Premier today welcomed the report calling it ‘exhaustive’ – well with all due respect, I’ve written media releases longer than this,’ Mrs Fardell said.
‘I appreciate that the Auditor-General has undertaken the brief handed down and this is in no way a reflection on that office.
‘But we are talking about a plan that could very well impact on jobs, push up costs and affect the delivery of power to our communities.
‘It will change the face of the power industry, and racing ahead on the basis of this report seems foolhardy.
‘The protection for pensioners and low-income earners seems particularly inadequate and I am not reassured by this review at all.
‘I have to ask ‘why the rush?’. If this report is as comprehensive as the Government claims then all stakeholders – and I include consumers and workers in this – should be given ample opportunity to consider the findings.
‘I am afraid that in a bid to secure the confidence of investors the security of consumers and workers is being jettisoned.’
Mrs Fardell has urged as many people as possible to download the report or pick up a copy from the Electorate Office.
‘I would also urge the Opposition not to make a hasty endorsement and consult with communities,’ she said.
‘The Opposition asked for this report, and I hope that was more than just an exercise in ticking the boxes to keep face with their constituency.
‘I hope they will base their decision on more than has been presented to the MPs and the people of NSW so far.’
