Council's bite on dog owners

17 Jun, 2011 08:46 AM
Parkes Shire Council has expressed concern regarding the number of dogs and cats being impounded and euthanized on a weekly basis within the district.

The alarming number of dog attacks and the possibility of having to face legal action have also forced council to look at instigating an awareness campaign within the shire.

Statistics show that more than 30 dogs and cats are impounded in Parkes on a monthly basis with the majority being put down.

Last month a total of 28 dogs and six cats were impounded of which 26 were destroyed.

Of even more concern to council is the reported number of dog attacks.

Parkes Shire Council will contact Minister for Local Government Don Page requesting he investigate the possibility of conducting an awareness campaign highlighting owner’s obligations regarding the keeping of dangerous dogs.
