Parkes Men’s Shed and local Waste to Art group has been approached by Parkes Shire Council on behalf of Mayor Cr Ken Keith to determine interest in the creation of a two-metre high sculpture as a shire entry in a regional Animals on Bikes competition.
Council, with assistance of local business Bosmac, will assist in the provision of any scrap metals towards the sculpture.
Council is also keen to get the regional NetWaste group involved too and approaches will be made by Mr Steven Campbell (Director Planning and Environment).
The decision follows a letter tabled at the most recent council meeting from organisers of the Animals on Bikes promotion clarifying their request for council’s assistance in establishing a 120km tourist drive along Obley Road – the back road to the Dubbo Zoo.
This was because council
had resolved at its meeting of 15 September to advise the Animals on Bikes committee that it was unable to assist at that time with financial assistance towards the project.
The amount sought was $500 which council believed at the time was to assist in the construction process.
However, the organisers advised council that the amount sought was for promotional support of a tourist map and website marketing of the Central West featuring Parkes shire’s points of interest.
A request was also lodged for the Mayor to create a two-metre high sculpture as part of a competition.
Council was advised that
participating mayors from
neighbouring towns were
receiving assistance from their local Men’s Shed groups with the creation of sculptures for the project.
The suggestion was that Mayor Keith seeks assistance from the Parkes Men’s Shed group.
However, due to various commitments, Cr Keith advised that he is unable to accommodate the Animals on Bikes project by creating a sculpture but suggested council approach the Parkes Men’s Shed with the challenge.
He suggested that council may be able to assist with some suitable scrap resources if the Parkes Men’s Shed were to accept.
Cr Wayne Scott agreed that it would be a great idea to
approach the NetWaste group in getting the Waste to Art people involved.
“Similar things are on show at other parts of the state such as galas at Gulargambone and cows on the outskirts of Orange. I think it’s a great idea,” he said.
Councillors agreed to the following recommendations:
* The Parkes Men’s Shed and Waste to Art be approached to participate in the Animals on Bikes competition on behalf
of the Mayor and further
that council, with assistance from Bosmac provide any
scrap metals that may be available to the Parkes Men’s Shed for the creation of a suitable sculpture.
* That the Tourism Manager Kelly Hendry prepare a report on the value aspect of funding the advertising request.
