From My Verandah

30 Jul, 2010 06:28 AM
I’ve written many times about how the times, they are a changing and how I’m having great difficulty keeping up.

Not that I think I’m alone - I’m sure there are plenty more out there just like me.

But some around my ilk are prepared to give technology a go - and good on them. I’m just not prepared to give up my time to spend mucking around with phones, computers etc.

I’d much prefer to be outside mucking about - or even better, in the shed!

Which all has absolutely nothing to do with what I had planned to say.

Times certainly are different and I’m not sure I understand just how it happens.

For example, we used to have to be wary of the ‘seven year itch’ when it was perceived married people might get a dose of the wanders and seek out a new partner. When love and affection gave way to disillusion and disappointment.

But if you make it past the seven year period, don’t go getting too complacent - apparently nowadays the ‘itch’ comes after 12 years!

It appears statistics show people who divorce actually spend more than than a decade together before they split. And it is happening more regularly.

The reasons come down to ‘growing apart’ and ‘falling out of love’.

Couples do not appear prepared to work through any problems they are having, just believing it is ‘too much hard work’ to stay together and decide to ‘get out of there.’

Another change - much more pleasant - in our modern world is that we are much younger as we get older. That 50 is the new 40 for example.

I’d prefer to actually think of it as 60 being the new 40! Yeah I know, dream on.

But that is how the Baby Boomers feel nowadays - just like big kids having a great time.

So some changes I’m prepared to accept.

It would be remiss not to congratulate Parkes Hockey on the magnificent veterans womens hockey championships conducted last weekend.

More than 60 teams, involving about 1000 people, were in town for the titles.

Not only did Parkes turn on outstanding facilities, but outstanding weather as well.

I enjoyed going over and watching the action and spoke to many of the visitors.

Without exception, they said they had had a fantastic time, praising the organisation, the facilities, even the grass fields which were widely praised as the best they had played on.

(Most hockey players now play on artificial surfaces and are reluctant to play on mere grass).

The Parkes sides also rose to the occasion, two making it to the finals.

From what I witnessed, the visitors also liked to party pretty hard, so the business community also would have done pretty well out of it too.

The veterans movement is fantastic.

Oldies pulling on the boots again, dragging the stick out of the cupboard and running around.

But more so, because it brings ex-players out of the woodwork. They rekindle their younger playing days by all teaming up again. In many cases, players who moved away from home long ago, but who remember where they learnt their hockey skills.

Last weekend was a classic example. I saw many players who grew up here return to play with Parkes.

I also noticed many other players who I thought had retired years and years ago, running...er, walking, around the field. Terrific!

Our son, Roel actually pulled out his old stick and shin pads to have a run with the Parkes 35s at the mens veterans state titles in Sydney. He has not played for about 10 years so it was always going to be quite a challenge for him.

But he had an absolute ball - and despite from what I can gather was a fairly social time for them - they did really well, losing just one game.

Roel’s already in training for next year - he’ll need to be, to be anywhere near fit enough by then!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:

Every problem has in it the seeds of its own solution. If you don’t have any problems, you don’t get any seeds.

"just like big kids having a great time." Roel, I could not agree more. Most folks I know tell me the same thing. Ben
